7th Annual Topanga Butterfly Day
Mountain Mermaid May 5, 2024 10am – 6pm

Butterfly Day is an Epic, Annual, Day-long, Home-grown,

Feel-good, Pollinator-promoting Nature Festival!

Butterfly Day has its roots in the relatively modest “Monarch Day at the Mermaid” beginning back in 2015. We had a little pop-up live-butterfly habitat, native plants for sale, and free milkweed for the neighbors. Later we joined forces with Topanga Elementary School and it became, “Butterfly Day at the Mermaid” and has grown and evolved to become a cherished Topanga tradition. It features live butterflies, live music all day, and live representatives from dozens of environmental and community organizations. There’s face-painting, arts and crafts, and food and beverage. The whole Jimenez family, Sergio, Yaotl, Luna, Coyolli, and little Lluvia will be selling their native, pesticide-free butterfly plants. And, there are some big surprises this year–namely, a live raptor and reptile show, and “Sonic Butterfly”, a 26-string acoustic, chromatic, long-string harp, designed by Andrea Brook. The strings will span 100 feet over the audience in the front yard transforming the Mermaid into a breathtaking immersive musical instrument.
