Loco for Local Plants: Site-Specific California Native Plant Gardening
February 12 @ 4:30 am - 6:00 am
An excellent lecture for beginning & intermediate native plant gardeners, focusing on local
plants and the challenges some of them present in the garden. The class will focus on techniques used for collecting and growing conservation-quality native plants, along with tips on how to successfully grow:
– Dudleya, Monkeylfowers and other cliff-dwelling native plants
– Santa Cruz Island Buckwheat and other native plants found only on the Channel Islands
– Beach Suncups, Lizard’s Tail and other sand-loving native plants found along local beaches
The class will be led by Antonio Sanchez, nursery manager and restoration volunteer coordinator for the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Antonio has over 15 years experience growing and killing native plants in nurseries and landscapes, and led the nursery at California Botanic Garden in Claremont and was co-owner of Nopalito Native Plant Nursery in Ventura. In his spare time he enjoys listening to the native plant band Sage Against the Machine on Instagram.
