Getty Center and Villa Set to Reopen

The Santa Monica Mountains are home to the Getty Villa Museum and Getty Center, and both are preparing to reopen, following a yearlong closure to support emergency response to COVID-19.

Look for the Villa to reopen first, possibly as early as April, according to a Getty press release. Visitors will be treated to a special exhibition on Mesopotamia.

The reopening plans must meet county health guidelines that include limiting the number of visitors each day, face coverings and social distancing, and temperature checks on arrival.

The Villa has operated on a reservation basis for years due to parking limitations. Anyone who has visited the institution via car is familiar with the timed advanced reservation process. The main difference will be that visitors arriving via public transportation will also now need reservations and that fewer reservations will be available, to meet county COVID-19 requirement capping attendance at 25 percent of capacity.

“Over the past year that we have been closed, we have taken the opportunity to do conservation work with our collection and deep-clean the galleries,” the announcement states.

“Now that we have a timeline for reopening, we will finalize the installation of some galleries and eagerly move forward with our plans to welcome visitors.”

Opening dates and reservation information will be available soon.
