Two simultaneous solo shows—one in each gallery—will open in the New Year at Topanga Canyon Gallery. The opening reception will be held January 8 from 4Pm to 7PM, and the shows will be open for three weekends, ending January 23. One of the artists will also be giving a talk on a new form of art ownership, Non-fungible tokens, on January 22 from 3 – 4 PM.
Catch & Release is the title of the exhibition in the South Gallery by Jonathan Burke, a realist painter depicting objects, landscapes and animals. His inspiration comes from nature, the rich heritage of representational art and familiar imagery offering endless creative interpretations.
Burke said developing this exhibition during the pandemic allowed him to create illusionistic art that searches for beauty and expresses reverence for the subjects he paints.
Jonathan Burke holds a BFA degree in painting from Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA degree in painting from Boston University. His art has been exhibited throughout the US including the Fry Art Museum, Seattle WA, Univ. of Texas, Corpus Christi TX, Riverside Art Museum, Riverside CA, Laguna Art Museum, Laguna Beach. His art was published in Horses – From Noble Steeds to Beasts of Burden, Watson Guptil, Cats – Wild Cats and Pampered Pets, Watson Guptil NY, and New Art, Harry Abrams Publisher, New York, NY.
In the north gallery, June Kim presents Amaurosis: Destitute of Vision. Kim’s installation brings attention to our global pandemic and the transition into an unseen future. Her use of red is connected to the Asian philosophy of destiny, “An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet.” In her fabrications, she delicately weaves the red thread through multiple transparent plexiglass layers; it becomes reminiscent of floating waves expressing the flux and change of our contemporary existence. Amaurosis is both a physical installation and digital 3D-rendered art.
June Kim is the founder of NFT Asian Women and has participated in numerous international art exhibitions including, Main Museum in LA, Korean Cultural Center in NYC, 508 gallery in London, Stratosphere NFT in Beijing, Search light NFT NYC 2021, and Iham gallery in Paris.
The gallery will be open Fridays 2pm – 7pm, Saturdays and Sundays Noon-5pm
