Every town has rules. Some are posted on signs. Some are written into municipal codes. Some are enforced by parking tickets. Topanga’s most important rules, however, exist entirely in the hearts and minds of its residents. And for the most part, you simply absorb them over time, like oak pollen or road closure updates. After 30 years of living here, we’ve come to recognize a few of these guidelines. So, with equal parts affection and experience, here is our attempt to codify seven Unspoken Rules of Canyon Life.
Rule #1: Don’t Judge a Book by its Cover
This may be the most important rule in the canyon. The person in designer clothing driving a luxury SUV may be renting. The person in muddy boots driving a twenty-year-old pickup may own five cabins free and clear. The woman in line behind you buying chicken feed may have quietly founded three companies. The guy fixing a fence may be an award-winning musician. Topanga has always had an unusual relationship with status. People tend to be more interested in who you are or what you create than what you do for a living.
Rule #2: Community Is Our Greatest Currency
Money certainly exists in Topanga, but it’s far from the only currency. One neighbor knows native plants. Another understands water systems. Someone else knows which trash cans the bears knocked over last night. Need ballet slippers for your six-year-old’s 3 p.m. recital? Someone on the local WhatsApp has a pair. Information, tools, skills, produce, extra eggs, and helping hands all move through the canyon the same way they always have: neighbor to neighbor.
When a storm takes down a fence, people show up with tools before they’ve even been asked. During fires, floods, mudslides, road closures, and power outages, the canyon reveals its true operating system: an informal network of residents taking care of one another. Nobody keeps score. It’s simply understood that if you live here long enough, there will come a moment when you’ll need your neighbors—and another when they’ll need you. Topanga operates less like a town and more like a collective. Individually, none of us possesses all the knowledge, tools, or answers. Collectively, however, we do.
Rule #3: Respect Canyon Royalty
Every town has its VIPs. Topanga has Canyon Elders. They’ve witnessed decades of floods, fires, road closures, community battles, celebrations, and reinventions. In a place where local history is passed down more often through conversation than books, these longtime residents serve as our living archive—and every Topangan knows they’re due a certain amount of reverence. When they talk, we listen.
Rule #4: Drive Like You Live Here
This isn’t a shortcut. It’s home. Slow down through town. Break for quail. Give bicyclists a wide berth (even though we know there are a lot of them!). Make space for someone turning onto Topanga Canyon Boulevard, even if it costs you ten seconds. Nothing is improved by being in a hurry. Remember the old bumper sticker motto: I slow down through town, don’t bother honking.
Rule #5: Live Lightly
Whether you’re hiking a trail, picnicking by the creek, or simply enjoying a quiet corner of the canyon, leave it better than you found it. Pack it in, pack it out. Living in Topanga also means recognizing that we share this place with wildlife. We avoid unnecessary pesticides and poisons because they don’t stop with the intended target—they ripple through the entire ecosystem. We don’t kill rattlesnakes simply for being rattlesnakes. We give them space, respect that this was their home first, and remember that every creature has a role to play in keeping the canyon healthy. Coexistence isn’t always the easiest choice, but it’s part of living here.
Rule #6: Topanga Days Comes First
Topanga Days isn’t just another weekend—it’s our community’s family reunion and a celebration of everything that makes this canyon resilient, creative, and one of a kind. Protect it on your calendar at all costs. Birthdays, weddings, vacations…they can wait. Your canyon family is calling. And remember: Topanga Days is also the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Topanga Community Center—the heart of our community and home to Food Truck Fridays, the canyon’s only playground, the Topanga Farmers Market, and countless programs, performances, classes, and events that bring us together all year long.
Rule #7: Don’t Change Topanga. Let Topanga Change You.
Nearly everyone arrives with ideas about what Topanga is supposed to be and ideas on how to improve it. Ways to make it more convenient. Ways to polish its rough edges. But the canyon has always had a way of quietly reshaping the people who choose to call it home. And we hope that you let it.
Change can be beautiful, but we encourage newcomers to spend more time listening than fixing, observing than judging, and discovering what makes this place so special before trying to reinvent it. The longer you’re here, the more you realize that living in Topanga isn’t about making the canyon fit your life. It’s about letting the canyon change the way you see the world.
Of course, every set of rules comes with a caveat: you don’t have to know any of them to belong here. So if you’re new to the canyon, consider this less a test and more an invitation. You’re welcome in, you’re already part of the story and we’re so happy to have you here.
