Long-time local Topangan and local realtor Karen Dannenbaum was awarded the Hero of the Quarter award by the Malibu Association of Realtors this month.

According to the HERO Committee, the award is given to the member who most demonstrates “courage, kindness, selflessness and compassion” among other notable qualities.

“The Committee declared that “For over 20 years, Karen has actively contributed to the Topanga community, particularly in support of seniors. Beginning as a volunteer, she joined the board of the Canyon Sages, where she eventually took on the responsibility of coordinating and preparing desserts for monthly free dinners for Topanga seniors. She also organized a large annual holiday dinner that serves over 100 seniors at no cost.

“In addition, Karen has led initiatives at the Topanga Library, including a free adult knitting class where participants crafted and distributed over 100 pink hats for the Women’s March, with hats sent across the U.S. and even to Sweden.

“Karen’s community contributions extend to organizing creative yarn bombings in Topanga and managing the popular sangria bar at the Topanga Days fundraiser, where she crafted over 60 gallons of sangria from scratch to raise funds for the Topanga Community House.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, Karen worked with local groups to deliver meals to those in need. Her service also includes leadership roles as the treasurer of a local Boy Scout troop and as the former treasurer for the Topanga Brokers Co-op. Her sustained efforts exemplify her deep commitment to community service and the well-being of Topanga residents.”

Topanga New Times salutes Karen for her award and feels it is justly deserved!
