As the canyon collectively recovers from another unforgettable Topanga Days weekend (and slowly returns from whatever idyllic parallel universe we all briefly inhabited) we find ourselves reflecting on just how fortunate we are to have the Topanga Community Center (TCC) at the heart of our community.
If you’ve lived in Topanga for any length of time, chances are your story intersects with the TCC in some way. The TCC is woven into the fabric of canyon life.
As founders of the Topanga Farmers Market, we know the TCC as the home of our Friday market. More importantly, we know that there would be no Topanga Farmers Market without the Topanga Community Center.
What many people may not realize is that the Farmers Market is officially a nonprofit program operating under the umbrella of the TCC. As our fiscal sponsor, the TCC provides the nonprofit structure, financial stewardship, insurance, administrative support, and operational guidance that allow the market to exist and grow as a true community resource. This partnership also means that donations made to support either the Farmers Market or the TCC are tax-deductible, helping sustain programs and services that benefit the entire canyon.
Over the past two and a half years, the TCC has stood beside us through every challenge and every milestone. From helping launch a brand-new community market to guiding us through fires, road closures, and periods of recovery, their support has never wavered. Their belief in the importance of local farms, gathering spaces, and community connection is one of the primary reasons we are still here every Friday morning, welcoming neighbors into the canyon.
What feels especially meaningful is that the roots of the Topanga Farmers Market mirror the origins of the TCC itself. In 1949, a group of local women formed the Topanga Woman’s Club and set out to create a place where the canyon could gather, connect, and celebrate together. Through volunteer labor, fundraising, and community support, they helped build what would become the Community House.
More than 75 years later, their vision and the spirit of community that inspired it continue to thrive. The Topanga Farmers Market grew from that same grassroots ethos—to bring people together—to support local agriculture, strengthen community resilience, and create a consistent gathering space for the canyon. What began as an idea has now become part of the TCC nonprofit family, joining Topanga Youth Services (TYS) and The Sages as community-serving programs.
Today, the TCC touches nearly every part of life in the canyon. It hosts AA and NA meetings, grief and recovery gatherings, youth soccer and sports programs, blood drives, open mic nights, Swap Meets, square dances, adult-only dance nights, clothing swaps, children’s dance and Tae Kwon Do classes, the infamous Food Truck Fridays, Silent Discos, daily senior classes and programming through The Canyon Sages, the Topanga Symphony, community meetings, teen theater performances, Topanga Historical Society gatherings, birthday parties, workshops, weddings, memorials, Easter Egg Hunts, holiday parties, year-round playground meetups, and we’re probably missing so much more.
It is home to Reggae on the Mountain, emergency response efforts during times of crisis, and of course Topanga Days—now celebrating its 51st year as one of the canyon’s most beloved traditions. The property is also cared for with dedication by longtime caretaker Jerry Simer, whose stewardship helps keep the grounds welcoming and functional for all (though your dog may receive a more nuanced welcome).
The TCC is far more than a building with an impressive number of folding chairs and a beautiful stone hearth. It is where neighbors become family, first canyon friendships are formed, where children grow up, where traditions are preserved, and where the canyon gathers in moments of both celebration and need.
Structurally, the TCC is a unique nonprofit model. It is funded by donations, memberships, and rentals—not taxes—and sustained by a mix of community giving and participation. Membership, in particular, is more than symbolic; it is a shared responsibility that helps keep the dream of the TCC alive and ensures that this rare community institution remains accessible for future generations. Plus, with a membership, you and your family will receive discounted tickets to the TCC hosted events, so your membership will pay for itself after only a few events!
Much of the TCC’s work is powered by volunteers, reflecting the same grassroots spirit on which it was founded. Over the past three years, working closely with the TCC Board has given us a firsthand look at just how much they do behind the scenes. The scope of what they sustain is remarkable—work that, in many organizations, would require full-time paid staff.
From cleaning up after Food Truck Fridays to recruiting blood donors, filling thousands of eggs for the Easter Egg Hunt, and countless other unseen tasks, these community members quietly give their time out of love for Topanga. The next time you see Terri Moriarty, Kathleen Beegle, Nonie Shore, Sophie Zeiler, Rick Provisor, Crystal June Storey, Bridget Cook, James Webber, or Alexis English, please thank them for helping keep our canyon dream alive.
