Canyon Sages: September 10 Meet for Volunteers

Canyon Sages are looking for community activists to join the Canyon Sages Volunteer Meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 1:00 p.m. in the Sages Room behind the Topanga Community Club at 1440 N. Topanga Cyn Blvd. No expertise is required—just a desire to help and meet fellow Topangans.

Volunteers are needed to instruct low-cost classes, run clubs, or host helpful seminars for Sages in Topanga. Classes of interest are languages, art, exercise, Tai Chi, journal writing, cooking, or clubs like a knitting circle.

All ideas for classes, clubs, or workshops are welcome, as the organization would like to encourage proposals from anyone interested in helping out.

The Sages are also looking for tech savvy individuals who would like to volunteer virtually as outreach and communication specialists, to write articles and send e-blasts to Sages members about new classes, clubs and programs; update the at-risk list for seniors who might need assistance during an emergency; prepare the monthly calendars and update the Sages website and membership rolls.

A team of volunteers is also needed for hands-on help in the kitchen to prepare the Senior Dinner on the first Friday of each month from October through June. Volunteers of all ages are welcome; teens can work for community service hours, helping to set up and decorate tables, and gather in the kitchen to assist expert chefs.

Help is needed with facilitating fundraisers and grant writing. Drivers are needed to take seniors to doctor’s appointments, food pantries, and to run errands. Drivers may volunteer or charge a reasonable fee. Handypeople are needed for simple home repairs, or to install ramps and other safety measures for injured or disabled Topangans. This kind of help can improve people’s lives, drastically.

Wise Sages are also needed to fill leadership roles such as President/Meeting Facilitator, Treasurer and Recording Secretary. All Sages are welcome to join the leadership team to set priorities and implement programs to better serve the needs of Topanga seniors.

If you would like to be involved but can’t make it to the volunteer meeting on September 10, sign up as a member and/or volunteer at canyonsages.com. Once you’ve signed up, you’ll get e-blasts, including a monthly calendar of events, classes, clubs and programs. Classes are Sages sponsored, but open to all ages, so that the instructors can reach more people and keep their fees low.

The Canyon Sages is Topanga’s first and only social and service organization designed for Topanga’s older generation. The Sages was born in 2009 as a committee of the Topanga Town Council set up to create activities for seniors and reach out to those seniors isolated or in need. Canyon Sages is now allied with the Topanga Community Club, under their non-profit umbrella.
