Santa Monica College’s Sustainable Materials Management program (formerly Recycling and Resource Management program), teaches innovative strategies to design out waste, improve efficiency, keep materials in use, and regenerate natural systems. Gain hands-on experience through fieldwork, real-world case studies, and instruction from industry experts to solve sustainability challenges. This program will help you prepare for in-demand careers in one of today’s fastest-growing sustainability fields and help build a more efficient, resilient future.
The program includes 4 core SMM courses:
SMM 1: Introduction to Sustainable Materials Management
SMM 2: Culture and Zero Waste
SMM 3: Sustainable Materials Management and Zero Waste for Communities
SMM 4: Sustainable Materials Management and Zero Waste in Business
Plus the student’s choice of 2 electives from a diverse selection of cross-listed sustainability/environmental courses in fields such as Business, History, Biology, Geology, and many more.
Earn a 12 or 18 unit professional Certificate in one semester, or earn an Associate of Science (AS) degree in Sustainable Materials Management in 2 years. Upon completing the SMM certificate or degree, students are eligible to earn the USGBC TRUE Advisor accreditation.
