Golden Milk

Rich, spicy golden milk is filled with immunity-boosting spices. This recipe has its roots in ancient Indian Ayurvedic traditions, but this version can be made with dairy milk or a vegan alternative like coconut milk. Warm, comforting, and calming, a cup of golden milk before bedtime is a lovely way to end the day. Photos by Nathalie Krull

Golden milk is a traditional ayurvedic recipe that has been enjoyed for thousands of years. It’s super healing, smooth and nourishing. Try it as a nightly, wind-down drink, and slip into a calm and peaceful state.

The star of this drink is the super anti-inflammatory turmeric spice, which also gives the drink a beautiful golden color, hence the name. Fresh turmeric can be used, but powdered turmeric is more concentrated and traditionally used. It is a natural way to boost immunity and calm down inflammation in the body.

Turmeric’s active compound, curcumin, is where all the good stuff is at, but your body will have difficulty absorbing it on its own. With just a pinch of black pepper, which contains piperine, you can increase curcumin absorption by up to 2000 percent! The second key ingredient to help absorb the most from the turmeric is a small amount of fat. So, you can either use milk with some fat in it or add a 1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil instead. Traditionally, golden milk is made using raw dairy milk, but I like to make it using coconut milk. You can try almond, cashew, oat, soy, or any kind of milk you prefer.

Ingredients:

1.) 2 cups of milk of choice. If you are using a low fat or nonfat milk, add ½ teaspoon of coconut oil

2.) 1 teaspoon organic Turmeric powder

3.) 1 inch peeled and sliced fresh ginger

4.) ¼ -½ a teaspoon of ground cinnamon powder

5.) Pinch of black pepper

6.) Optional add-ons: a splash of vanilla extract, a dash of cardamon, honey or maple syrup to lightly sweeten.

Golden milk time…

Simply add all the main ingredients to a small pot (milk, turmeric powder, fresh ginger slices, cinnamon powder, and black pepper), leaving out the add-ons until later. Heat on low, stirring frequently for 10 to 15 minutes.

We want it to cook and infuse the milk with all the good stuff but not boil it. I use a whisk to help break up the powders and help combine them with the milk. Once your time is up, remove it from the heat, and add anything else you would like.

Next, hold a small strainer over a cup, and gently pour the golden milk in. I like to use a frother to create a frothy topping, and make it feel fancy. Sprinkle the top with a dusting of cinnamon powder, and there you have it. A beautiful, delicious, and comforting drink.

This recipe makes enough for two small servings or one large one. Enjoy the simplicity of creating a healthful cup of soothing golden milk any time you like. It can be quite addictive, and something to look forward to…Curling up under a blanket, holding a warm cup of spiced milk, soothing every inch of you. This is the kind of recipe that everyone should try. Wishing you good health and good luck on all your cooking adventures.
